Madras Day: Chennai Celebrates Its 378th Birthday Today

23:48 0
Chennai is celebrating its 378th birthday today. It's called Madras Day as a tribute to its rich colonial past. Now an IT, automobile and education major, the Madras most of its citizens reminisce of had its humble beginnings almost 400 years ago.

On this day in 1639, the British bought a small piece of land overlooking the beach from the Nayak rulers to establish their East India Company. It was then called Chennaipatnam. Soon, the old Fort St George came up, around which George town developed which later became Madras.

The city expanded along the River Cooum. The then Madras Presidency included even Andhra Pradesh, with Madras the hub for commerce to culture, education to entertainment, and health to hospitality. In 1996 the Tamil Nadu government renamed the city Chennai, to end the colonial tag. But Chennaites cherish their colonial heritage as Madras Day.

Chennai is perhaps the only Indian city that celebrates its rich colonial culture. Many call it the "ever-changing yet never changing spirit". Over the next week, many Chenaiites will re-discover their heritage in a variety of ways.
A city deserves to celebrate its birthday.
And Madras, that is Chennai certainly deserves it.
Last but not least - A city of great history and heritage. A city that welcomes everyone!

Automatic Coach Washing Plant at Tambaram Terminal

05:37 0
An Automatic Coach Washing Plant (ACWP) has been sanctioned for the Tambaram railway terminal to automate the process of washing train coach exteriors while they move from the station to the maintenance shed.
Sanctioned at a cost of Rs 6 crore, the plant will replace the manual washing of coach exteriors at the terminal, but the bad news is that it would take about two years for the plant to be set up at Tambaram, according to Railway sources.
According to officials in the construction wing of the Southern Railway, the construction of the third terminal of the city at Tambaram, which was supposed to be finished by July 2016, has been completed but is awaiting commissioning from the division.
"The construction is ready with two stabling lines, two pit lines, and two sheds. Electricity connection is available but no water supply yet," said a senior official, speaking about the delay in commissioning the terminal at Tambaram, that sees about one lakh footfalls per day from suburban as well as Mail and Express trains.Earlier in 2016, the Railway Minister had ordered that all new pit lines that come up across Indian Railways should be provided with ACWP. Railway Board has also directed zones to expedite works for the ACWP.
The sanctioned plant will have the capacity to wash 250 coaches per day on two tracks, as the trains move at a speed of 15 kmph from the terminal to the pit lines, an official said.
"At a point, two trains can be washed and daily, 10 trains. As the train moves slowly, it would take about 7-10 minutes for all the coaches to be washed. The waste water would be recycled and again used for washing," said the official, adding that the plant would have an inbuilt water recycling unit.
With the water recycling unit, the water reuse will further help conserve water. The plant operations would be monitored in a control room, officials added.

Tambaram Railway Station Getting Ready To Become Another Terminal

01:05 0

Modern facilities being created to augment train services from Tambaram

The Tambaram Railway Station is getting ready to become the third terminal of the Chennai Railway Division after Chennai Central and Egmore. With more modern facilities being created, it is becoming one of the railway terminals of the Chennai Suburban Railway Network.

Sources with Southern Railway said that the civil work on the coach terminal was complete, and it was ready for launch. Augmenting train services from Tambaram terminal requires more coach allotments and Chennai Division officials have been in touch with the Railway Board and coach suppliers.

A decision was made a few years ago to decongest Chennai Egmore and have a terminal at Tambaram to operate a few trains from there. Over a period of time, several Express/Super Fast trains were diverted from Chennai Central to Egmore. But to decongest Egmore station, two daily express trains — Circar Express to Kakinada Port and Kacheguda Express to Kacheguda — are being operated from the Chengalpet junction. Sources said that they were focussing on improving passenger amenities at various stations on the Chennai Beach-Tambaram section. Once they get clearance from the Railway Ministry, the terminal would start functioning.

After taking up work on the second entrance on the Velachery Main Road, the Tambaram railway station has achieved many milestones in terms of infrastructure. Additional platforms, water facilities, escalators connecting the eastern and western sides of the station, CCTV cameras on platforms and at entry and exit points, clean and litter-free platforms are some of the additions that were made in the past two years, said a railway official. The latest addition is food plazas on both sides of the station. The credit for this would go to the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation. The construction of food plazas began in November last year, with an investment of  3 to 4 crore and it took about 8 months to complete. The objective is to dish out quality food from popular outlets to passengers coming to Tambaram station, he said.
